The other day I was heading out for a walk with the baby and as I tried to get on her jacket, I had one arm above her head and the other tangled on the side – she shot me a puzzling look as if to say, “Really Mom, are you new at this?” At that moment I laughed and said to her, “You may have realized I’m new at this job, but just know, I will always love you to the moon and back.” As we headed for the door, I decided that I would write her a letter to explain exactly how I was feeling in that moment; both overwhelmed and so happy with my role as a new mom.

Sweet baby girl,

If you only learn one thing from me in your entire life, please know this, I will always love you to the moon and back.

You might have realized at this point, but your Daddy and I are brand new at this job.  I know sometimes we’ve taken you out for a walk without a jacket, put your clothes on backwards, and probably let you go a little too long with a dirty diaper, but just know, that we both love you to the moon and back.

It’s a tricky job being your mom, because at times, I’m just so unsure of what you need. I wrack my brain trying to understand why you cry one minute and not the next, why you sleep peacefully one night and then not the next – but I guess that’s just you being you. I know I may seem frustrated or overwhelmed, but know that it’s not you; we’re just learning to work together and some day soon when you find your voice, we’ll be learning again then too.

I know we may be new at this job, but just know that your Daddy and I are your biggest fans. We beam with love at your every smile, giggle and roll and can’t wait to see what else you’ve got up your sleeve. So, please forgive us when we make mistakes, because we mean well – we really do.

Remember the book we’ve been reading, “Wherever You Are” – this part always reminds me of you:

           “So hold your head high

            and don’t be afraid

            to march to the front

            of your own parade.

If you’re still my small babe

or you’re all the way grown,

            my promise to you

            is you’re never alone.

You are my angel, my darling,

my star…and my love will find you,

            wherever you are.”

Ps. Let’s keep working on that whole sleeping-through-the-night-thing, I know you can do it!

Love,

Mom
