Babies are born with over one billion brain cells. So what can you do to nourish that rich network of resources and encourage its use? It all boils down to creating a loving, stimulating and encouraging environment. The brain operates, to a large extent, on the “use it or lose it” principle. What your baby sees, feels, hears, and experiences are the templates upon which the brain builds its responses, learns to solve problems, stores data, and handles emotions. Stimulating your baby’s brain is simple.
- Sing and talk to her
- Rock her often
- Place interesting, colorful objects and pictures near her
- Play peek-a-boo and sing silly songs
- Laugh a lot
- Read to her, even during her earliest days
It doesn’t take a lot of time to nurture the vast potential her brain possesses. The fundamental thing is to remember how important you (and all the amazing things you do) are to her and to her future. She may not need to hold on to all one billion cells, but you can ensure that the ones she keeps are tuned to the opportunities that lie ahead.
