Whining (ages 2-4)
Does your child whine? Is it driving you crazy? Well, you're not alone.
Children do what works. If whining gets a reaction or attention from you then they’ll continue with it. Eventually it becomes a habit and your child will find it hard to communicate any other way. To help teach whining children to talk in a normal voice try the following ideas:

- Every time your child whines ask them to use a 'normal voice'.They need to know whining is not a normal way of talking. Model how you would like them to talk. For example, "Mommy could I have a drink please" (instead of "Mooommmmmyyyy, I'mmmmmmm thiiiiirsssty").
- Talk to your child about what whining sounds like. Give them an example - be humorous not mean about it - maybe they don't realize what they sound like.
- Be consistent in your mission to stop whining- if whining works, your child will use it.
- Whining behavior may be reduced if you praise children when they are behaving how you would like them to behave. For example, "I really liked the way you used your normal voice to ask for a drink" or even just "Great asking!"
- If all else fails take a break with your child - get out of the house - go for a walk in the park or read a book together.
