Glue ear
Glue ear refers to the condition where fluid that remains after an infection of the middle ear becomes thick and gooey, much like glue.
What is it?
This fluid is now too thick to drain through the Eustachian tubes or be absorbed back into the body’s drainage systems. The result may be a decrease in hearing and eventually destruction of the tiny bones in the middle ear that transmit sound. What are the causes?
- Middle ear infections are very common in early childhood. Sometimes treatment will not eradicate all the infection causing fluid to accumulate and solidify.
- At other times, drainage by way of the Eustachian tubes, leading from the middle ear to the nose, may be blocked. Whatever the cause, serious consequences to hearing and middle ear function may result.
Possible Symptoms
- Lost or diminished hearing.
- Feeling of fullness in the ear or a dull ache.
- Persistent nasal drainage, cough or nasal congestion.
- Ringing in the ears.
- Possible diminished balance.
Should I see a doctor?
- “Glue ear” is not always associated with an ear infection.
- If for any reason hearing loss occurs, or an earache persists, check it out!
What is the treatment?
- Drainage of the fluid may be necessary. This is most often done by a surgical opening in the ear drum. In order for drainage to continue, a small plastic tube or grommet may be placed in the opening.
- Hearing should be tested both before and after treatment is initiated.
- Always arrange for a follow up visit to make sure an ear infection has resolved.
- Complete all recommended follow-up procedures.
- Swimming and bathing may be allowed if a proper fitting plug is placed in the outer ear.
