Swaddling your baby
For centuries, women have practiced this technique for soothing babies. If you'd like to give it a go, follow the instructions below.
- Swaddling works for most babies because they love the security of being snuggled up in a baby blanket. Let's face it: there isn't much room in a womb to move, so it makes sense that being closely wrapped up would feel good to a newborn. Okay, so here we go!
- Place a baby blanket (thin one) on a flat surface (beds are good). Make sure you do it far enough away from the edge so that your baby doesn't tumble off. Fold down the top corner a couple of inches.
- Gently lay your baby on his back onto the blanket. His head should be on the folded corner of the blanket.
- Pick up the left corner of the blanket; move it across his body; and tuck it under his back on his right side.
- Next, lift up the bottom corner of the blanket near your baby's right side and bring it across to tuck under his back on the opposite side.
