Helping your toddler cope with a new baby
The birth of a new child can be challenging for some children. Here are suggestions for handling this situation in a positive way.
Children younger than four or five years are often jealous of their
newborn brother or sister. Children react differently, and negative
behavior is a sign that the big brother or sister is having trouble
getting used to the new baby. This is very normal.
- When older children lose some of their parent's attention they will try to get it back any way they can. They may imitate the baby and start crawling or drinking. from a bottle or wetting their pants again, all of which is very common
- From birth on, talk about your new baby as a person e.g."Emily is crying. Do you think she is hungry?" Researchers have found that when parents talk about the baby this way the older child can adjust to the new baby's needs.
- Let your older child help care for his or her new brother and sister. Siblings are more likely to help each other when this is expected of them. Ask them if they would like to help change or feed the baby
- Spend some time alone with each child. There should be times when the child doesn't have to share you. This will help your child learn that they are still loved.
- Give your older child their own "baby doll" so they can imitate you taking care of the baby. Younger children really enjoy doing this. You may say to your child, "I'll help you take care of your baby and you can help me take care of your little sister."
