
Dr William Lawrence
William Lawrence Jr. is the Wake County Medical Director for Duke Primary Care and also serves as a clinician in the Healthy Lifestyles Program. In these roles at Duke University Health Systems, Lawrence supervises the clinicians at all DPC practices in Wake County and provides consultative services for children with elevated body mass index.Lawrence, a board-certified general pediatrician, completed his pediatric residency training in 1996 at Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington, D.C. He was recognized with the Doctor Maynard T. Cohen Memorial Award for excellence in the care of pediatric patients. He initiated his community-based practice of general pediatrics in Winston-Salem, N.C. with Aegis Family Health Centers in 1997. Lawrence also secured an academic appointment at Wake Forest University, where he was an active participant in resident education at Brenner Children’s Hospital.
In 2000, Lawrence returned to CNMC as an assistant professor in pediatrics and served as medical director for the Children's Health Centers-SE from 2001- 2004. He received certification in 2004 through the Johnson and Johnson/UCLA Health Care Executive Program at the Anderson Graduate School of Management. During that same year, he returned to North Carolina, where he served in several positions with the North Carolina Division of Medical Assistance including medical director, deputy director, and acting director.
A native of Durham, NC, Lawrence graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Biology. He obtained his M.D. from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC.
